Convergence

Our final May program, An Infinite Universe, celebrates the 60th anniversary of the NASA space program and the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Our performance features works like Don MacDonald’s When the Earth Stands Still, Stephen Chatman’s On the Beach at Night Alone, Kirke Mechem’s Island in Space, an a cappella composition with texts excerpted from poet Archibald MacLeish, the traditional Latin Mass, and an interview with the NASA Apollo 9 astronaut Russell Schweikart (the first person to successfully execute an unattached spacewalk), and two world premieres from ACS commissioned composers Lori Laitman and Tawnie Olson. We will additionally showcase a talented choral ensemble from the local-area K-12 public and privates schools, selected to perform alongside the Alexandria Choral Society via our ‘Sing-Off Grant Program.’
