In collaboration with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, watch the Alexandria Choral Society perform the groundbreaking "Earth Symphony," composed by Jake Runestad and librettist Todd Boss. "Earth Symphony," which won a 2022 EMMY® Award for musical composition, tells the story of Earth in five parts from the perspective of a mother telling the story of her children. It is a powerful and poignant reflection on the impact of our species on the planet we call home. As the composer describes: "The earth is changing, due to the impact of human behavior, and how we respond to these changes will determine the survival of our species."

United in Purpose

In collaboration with Alfred Street Baptist Church, ACS performed Rollo Dilworth's "United in Purpose" as part of our Shine on Us concert. The text is from Dr. Maya Angelou’s book, Rainbow in the Cloud: The Wisdom and Spirit of Maya Angelou, and emphasizes the importance of collective action to create positive change in the world.

You Birth the seeds

As part of the Alexandria Choral Society's On the Other Side of Change concert, ACS performed the world premiere of "You Birth the Seeds," composed by Melissa Dunphy with poetry by Zeina Azzam. Dunphy is an Australian immigrant to the United States who specializes in vocal, theatrical, and political music. Azzam is Palestinian-American poet, educator, writer, and activist -- and a Poet Laureate of the City of Alexandria. With both artists sharing a passion for social action, "You Birth the Seeds" is a powerful piece with a message of responsibility and hope for the future.
